What Qualifications Do I Need?

The qualifications you need can vary greatly depending on the course you want to study and the university you want to go to. Universities can have very different entry requirements for very similar courses. There are also different levels of higher education courses and the entry requirements vary accordingly.

It is essential to have grade A-C at GCSE in English and Maths.

Some courses have very specific entry requirements, e.g. if you want to study medicine you will need to have the required A-level grades (or equivalent) in science subjects.

Other courses require students to achieve a minimum number of UCAS points, which can be obtained from a range of subjects at different levels.

Thinking about what you can study

Most university courses will require you to have 5 GCSE grades A-C including English and Mathematics. If you do not achieve these grades on your first attempt it is worth considering retakes when you progress to college/sixth form (there are also Key Skills courses which some universities will accept as an equivalent for certain courses).

The main thing to remember is that you must do your research. The sooner you find out what qualifications are required for the subjects that interest you, the easier it will be to work towards your goal.
